With almost 7 years of experience in recruitment, the last 2 of which specialising in Advertising and PR roles within the Healthcare Communications sector, we sat down with Alice Smith to find out more about what advice she can impart to anyone looking to start their career within the industry, what the future looks like for healthcare comms professionals and how she can support you in your journey to a new role:

What do you think is the future for Healthcare Comms professionals working within Advertising & PR?

Healthcare Communications has always been an exciting and fluid sector; a competitive network of scientific and creative experts developing new and exciting ways to communicate advances in medicine is always going to lead to a lively situation. The industry has proven itself to be resilient during the most trying of times and ongoing growth/demand will lead to an increasingly buoyant market perfectly suited to the job seeker.

What would you say to a job seeker that’s looking to start a career in either Healthcare PR or Healthcare Advertising?

When it comes to starting out in Healthcare Communications, Healthcare PR or Healthcare Advertising experience is usually key. If you’re studying and thinking about getting into Healthcare Communications then try to get an internship/work experience within an agency as it can give you a real edge over other applicants and give you a true insight into the industry itself! Whilst a lack of experience can be a barrier to getting your foot in the door of a healthcare PR or Advertising agency it also doesn’t have to be…we work with some great clients who put personality-fit and a passion for healthcare above all else, so if you’re curious then get in touch for a chat!

Why should job seekers use you to find their next role?

Whether you’re a Medical Copywriter, Account Manager (Account Executive through to Group Account Director) or a Creative (Artworker, Designer, Art Director or Creative Director) then I can help you find your next job. I partner with most Healthcare Advertising & PR agencies across the UK so no matter what is on your wish list I can find suitable opportunities that match your needs. I am a dedicated specialist Recruiter who will be your biggest advocate throughout your job hunt; I will advise, guide and support you through each step of the process and I don’t give up!

Can you give a brief overview of how you’d support a candidate through the job process?

The best job hunting experience starts with an open and honest conversation about your specific requirements, career plans and experience. I will provide advice and consultation from the outset to give you as many options as possible based on your needs and using my specific knowledge of our clients. It can be a minefield navigating the many nuances and identities of each specific healthcare Advertising or PR agency so we put in a lot of time and energy to guide you. Once we have agreed on a plan of action I will introduce you to my clients to gather feedback and look at arranging interviews, we will discuss feedback and your thoughts along the path to an offer stage. At this point, you should be fully armed with enough information and anecdotal evidence to make a fully informed decision to take you into a long-term and fulfilling happy job!

Can you share some recent feedback you’ve received from a candidate/s you’ve helped?

"During these difficult times, it's a challenge for any business or individual to operate and deliver a satisfactory service. However, Carrot and Alice Smith in particular are maintaining a high level of professionalism and positivity. As far as my own situation is concerned, it's important to believe that your consultant genuinely understands your skills, a client's requirements and matches a suitable candidate. She has kept me informed on a regular basis about opportunities and maintains a dialogue that keeps you in the picture. By far more than other rec agencies do which I appreciate very much."
